That brick red is a very unusual color in L.A. in my experience. I wonder if that was how it looked in his day.
Ah, so many pilgrimage routes and so little time. It makes one want to live there permanently, doesn't it?
Have you made it to the Farmer's Market for lunch? What about Cantor's Deli? And for a real hoot, visit the tar-pits!
Seana: Houses are painted at least every 65 years here. That house has been painted since Chandler lived there. It was likely a cream or adobe color back then, I am told.
R.T.: Yes on the Farmer's Market, where I had lunches at Du-Par's and the Korean Barbecue, and also on Canter's Deli. No on the tar pits this time. I forgot to stop in before or after my visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and at night I would nit have seen much. They've been there 10,000 years; they can wait until I return to the area for Bouchercon in November.
Is the pink elephant cake bakery still operating in Farmer's Market?
I saw no pink elephants on this trip, but that does not mean they weren't there. There is much to see in the market.
Warren Beatty and Steve McQueen also lived at the Beverly Wilshire. Beatty had a penthouse where the green trees are in your photo.
R.T.: A friend more knowledgeable than I offers this on the fate of the pink elephant cakes, which apparently had some illustrious fans.
Stark: Thanks. McQueen is pretty cool despite the arguable happy ending to the movie version of The Getaway, and Beatty is allowed through these doors because of The Parallax View and Bonne and Clyde.
