Bouchercon 2014 Day -1: Guess Who came up!

(All photos by Peter Rozovsky. The fellow below with his face distorted
by the glass is Hector DeJean, ace publicist for Minotaur Books.)
The day before Bouchercon 2014 begins, I saw people I hadn't seen in days and weeks, and tomorrow I expect to see at least one I haven't seen in years.  Everyone is excited to see their friends but too tired from travel to party too raucously this first night, so we generally conduct ourselves in a responsible manner.

In case we're looking for something to do
after the convention, I suppose.
Had a minor screw-up on a food of order at the hotel bar, but received a Hendrick's and tonic on the house as compensation. Bouchercon is always what separates the weekend bartenders from the pros. Here's to you, ladies and gents. I'll buy you a drink Sunday night.

Music came up in a bar chat with homies John McFetridge and Kevin Burton "Thrilling Detective Web Site" Smith, in particular the Guess Who--appropriate for the Long Beach waterfront, which is full of colo(u)red lights.

Enjoy yourself! Keep us posted on your shenanigans (er, at least the ones that can be discussed in a public forum). And, as for the panels, as I said previously, "Knock 'em dead!"

Um, or maybe not. Seems it was The First Edition.

Right. Glad you stepped into see what condition your comment was in. That Kenny Rogers has inflicted some odd little songs on the world.

R.T.: Always. This is shenanigans con. Oddly enough, I am often more expansive about other parts of the convention than I am about my panels. That's because I'm too busy doing the panel to observe it.

Maybe I should put up a post, probably next week, about the interior life of a moderator.

I'm so envious. It must be gratifying for you to be so involved in the panels and criminal festivities. Say, who do I have to kill to get involved? Point out the mark. I'll make the hit.

Bouchercon is always a high point of the year; I'm already registered for next year's.

What do you have to do to get involved? Sign up. Volunteer. Hang out at the bar.

Bouchercons have been planned through through 2018: Raleigh, N.C., next year; New Orleans in 2016; Toronto in 2017; St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2018. Each Conventions sets up its own website, where you can all the information you need. Just search for "Bouchercon 20xx."

Always love your Bouchercon updates. I swear I'll get to one someday, but until then, I'll settle for living vicariously.

Adrian, you will be pleased to know that a number of people expressed their regrets that you could not make it.
